apache continuing freefall

In a disapointing bit of news Apache is continuing its freefall in marketshare against IIS. Netcraft.com is reporting that over the last 12 months apache has fallen from 69.5% of market share down to 61.64%.

This drop sounds rather bad on the surface. The news isn't as bad as it sounds. Several of the netcraft reports over the last few months has indicated that most of the IIS gains have come from Microsoft paying domain parking services to switch from using apache to using IIS.

In other words, most of the sites involved in the drop are not sites at all.
